Teaching idea: Inquiry into relationships, emotions, conflict resolution, self-regulation

I have created this lesson plan to explore the concept of emotions, self-regulation and conflict resolution. I have used this lesson plan in my classroom and it works very well. The ideas that learners come up with drive the inquiry. As you engage students with the teacher questions on these sheets ensure that you record their answers.

If you are teaching Grade 1 or 2 you may take prints on a3 sheets, make small groups, and discuss these ideas with learners and scribe. Reading related books aloud might be more helpful to understand this big idea.

Grade 3 upwards can do this independently, however, reading related books might be more helpful.

Learning with loose parts!!

Loose parts are indeed an engaging resource in our learning space to make learning and teaching more engaging. I used this question - "What do you think you can do with this?"...... This provocation gave learners ownership and got them thinking.

Our unit focused on the natural world around us and throughout the unit, we used loose parts. We gathered some natural materials as provocations to drive the inquiry. Natural materials are free of cost and are easily available in and around our homes. Loose parts have no specific function or goal. They can be moved, arranged, designed, taken apart and more!

Here is a list of natural materials that we used for our inquiry-based learning: sticks, stones, dry leaves, seeds, coconut shells, nutshells, seashells, sand, mud, flowers, leaves, rocks, pebbles, jute strings, jute fabric, wooden chips etc. Loose parts especially natural materials give an invitation to design, learn, create and explore.

Now during our asynchronous remote learning, my learners are making their personalized "nature discovery box" with available natural materials and using them as maths manipulatives and also as a resource to design and create.
'See-Think-Wonder' and 'Know-Want-Learned', these 2 visible thinking routines get the conversation started and help learners generate diverse questions and wonderings that they can further investigate and inquire into.
Stay tuned and I am excited to share some learning engagements that I am planning to do with my grade 1 enthusiastic explorers.

Thanks for reading! Hope this is helpful.

A note from a teacher...straight from the heart!💖

Please do not ask me about your child's score or grade. Do not ask me if he is better than this one or that one. Do not ask me what do you think about his/her grade....... !!! That doesn't matter. I will not give you any quantitative data, I can give you some qualitative data. What matters is how he/she feels about himself/herself or his/her work.

I have spent my life thinking about what my teacher feels about me....what my peers think about me.... what will this person say about me, what will that person say about me. It doesn't matter....all that matters is how I feel about myself. What I want to achieve in my life. How am I managing myself is all that matters.........my happiness matters!

I want my children to be self-driven and self-motivated. What I think they should do may not work for them always. Let them figure out things. Let them work on their self-management. Let them make mistakes, let them think, explore, learn, investigate, analyze. Give them diverse choices to LEARN!!! Let them ask questions, make decisions, solve problems, find solutions.

As a parent when I go for a parent-teacher conference I ask my daughter's teacher...What makes her happy in school? Is she kind and helpful to others?  Does she come to you with problems or solves her own problems? Finally, I feel this is what really matters.
